For a farmhouse holiday in Chianti country at a much lower price that many of the nearby ‘hamlet’ hotels, Salivolpi is a sound choice. The guesthouse comprises two low old stone farmhouses and a new bungalow in a large garden on the edge of the village. The neat bedrooms contain huge old carved beds. Hotel Tenuta di Ricavo

A whole hamlet abandoned in the 1950s has now been converted into a hotel that’s owned and run by the Scotoni and Lobrano families. It’s very well done out, with large, whitewashed vaulted rooms and a jumble of old rather than antique furniture. The ‘Black Sheep’ restaurant is popular with non-residents. Hotel La Frateria di Padre Eligio

Film-maker Anthony Minghella stayed here to revise a script; others come here on retreat (there are no TVs, radios or newspapers) or simply on honeymoon or holiday.
