Hotel Eden

Extensively refurbished in1994, Eden is unashamedly status-conscious, flaunting its designer labels and its famous guests – among them have been actors Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman. Hotel Empire Palace

Smart new executive hotel, opened in September 1999 in a 19th-century palace which was built as the Roman residence of the aristocratic Venetian Mocenigo family. The contemporary decoration combines Venetian elements with an astral theme, such as a night sky painted on the lobby ceiling. Via Aureliana 39, 00187 Roma.

Hotel Villa del Parco

Hotel D’Inghilterra

This used to be the guest accommodation for the Torlonia palace and a regal air survives, with antique mirrors and classically decorated rooms. It’s in a great spot close to the Spanish Steps and Trevi fountain. Some of the more expensive rooms have their own terrace. Rates do not include breakfast. Via Bocca di Leone 14, 00187 Roma.

Hotel Sole al Pantheon

In an unbeatable location opposite the Pantheon, this ancient building has been a hotel since 1467. It is distinctively and imaginatively decorated, with white leather seating and tiled floors lending a glamorous tone to the public areas. The bedrooms are all different. Hotel Majestic

A beautiful wrought iron ‘cage’ lift and many mirrors and fittings survive from the 1880s when this classic, old-world hotel was built. There are bougaiVillaea and olive trees in pots on the terraces, eight sizes of bed, a formal restaurant and a late-night brasserie with live jazz. Double-glazing keeps traffic noise to a minimum.
