Hotel Belvedere

Simple and good value, in a dreamy position on the shores of Lake Como. Although rooms are small, they all have private shower or bath and the best have wonderful lake views. Hotel Florence

The handsome 18th-century building occupies a prime position in Bellagio, pearl of Lake Como. An arcaded terrace makes a welcoming entry to the attractive foyer, with its beamed and vaulted ceiling and stone fireplace. Bedrooms have a similar rustic charm, with antiques and pretty fabrics. Hotel du Lac

A stone’s throw from the Florence (see above) this is another popular Bellagio hotel, with a delightful setting on the piazza, a welcoming atmosphere and high standards of housekeeping and cooking. Villa d’Este

 When the flash and the famous come to Lake Como, they usually head for historic Villa d’Este. Built in 1568 by Cardinal Tolomeo Gallio, it saw many illustrious visitors before becoming a hotel in 1873. Hotel San Giorgio

 A path lined with potted plants leads through lawns to the lakeside terrace of this large, atmospheric 1920s villa on the shores of Lake Como. Inside, spacious public rooms are filled with flowers, antiques and ornate mirrors. Bedrooms have a pleasantly dated feel but are very comfortable, with heavenly views.
